24 maut bangunan lama hangus

CALCUTTA: Kebakaran besar memusnahkan sebuah bangunan tujuh tingkat di sini mengorbankan 24 orang, termasuk dua mangsa yang melompat menyelamatkan diri, namun menemui ajal sambil diperhatikan orang ramai yang bersesak di kawasan itu, kata pihak berkuasa semalam.

Jumlah kematian akibat kebakaran kelmarin pada mulanya enam orang, namun anggota bomba kemudian menemui 18 lagi mayat di dalamnya, kata Pesuruhjaya Polis Gautam Mohan Chakraborty. Kira-kira 20 cedera dalam kebakaran di bandar sesak di timur India.

Polis sedang menyiasat punca kebakaran yang dipercayai bermula dari sebuah lif, kata pegawai polis, Javed Shamim.

Dua melompat sehingga maut dan empat gagal diselamatkan akibat melecur teruk di sebuah hospital, kata Setiausaha Dalam Negeri, Ardhendu Sen. Lima daripada 20 yang dirawat di hospital dalam keadaan parah, kata Sen kepada The Associated Press.

Ribuan orang berkumpul di bahagian sesak bandar itu bagi menyaksikan anggota bomba menggunakan tangga untuk menyelamatkan puluhan mangsa yang terperangkap di dalam bangunan pejabat dan pangsapuri, ketika asap tebal dan api keluar dari tingkat empat dan ke atas. Hampir 100 anggota bomba menghabiskan beberapa jam memadam kebakaran.
Bangunan hampir berusia 100 tahun itu terletak di kawasan sesak Park Street di sini terdiri daripada pejabat, pangsapuri dan restoran. – AP
